Instrument Panel

Step 1

Retrieve your Chassis assembly from Stage 44 and unplug the Brake Pedal Wire and Switch (marked ‘D’) from the Circuit Board:

Step 2

Fit the switch on the end of this Brake Pedal Wire into the Brake Pedal Switch (47B).

You may need to gently bend the leads of the switch to a 90° angle, as shown:

Step 3

Fit the small pin of the Brake Pedal Switch into this matching hole of the Instrument Panel and align the button of the switch into the nearby slot, as shown.

Secure the Brake Pedal Switch into place with one (1) AP screw.

The pin of the Switch mount needs to be at the bottom of the hole to make room for the screw (arrow below):

Step 4

Unplug the following six (6) wires from the Circuit Board:

  • Keypad (marked ‘G’)
  • Dashboard Monitors (marked ‘H’)
  • Steering Column (marked ‘I’)
  • Instrument Panel 1 (marked ‘J’)
  • Instrument Panel 2 (marked ‘L’)
  • Voicebox (marked ‘O’)

Step 5

Retrieve your Dashboard assembly from Stage 4. Temporarily uninstall the Lower Right Instrument Housing (4C) by removing the two (2) BP screws, as shown.

These BP screws are no longer needed and can be saved as spares:

Insert two of the LEDs on the Instrument Panel 1 cable (marked ‘J’) into these matching holes of this Dashboard Housing (4C), as shown.

This step in the magazine is normally later on, but it makes more sense to do it now. We will install the third LED of this cable in Step 9:

Secure these two LED wires to the Dashboard Housing with the Adhesive Tape, as shown.

If you find this tape does not hold very well, don’t hesitate to use a piece of electrical tape instead:

Step 6

Insert the two LEDs of the Dashboard Monitors cable (marked ‘H’) into these matching holes of the Monitor Housing (4D).

In order to fit the wiring better inside the Dashboard, you may want to gently bend the leads of each LED as we install them:

In the same way, insert the LED of the Keypad cable (marked ‘G’) into this matching hole of the Lower Right Button Panel Housing (4P):

Step 7

Insert the two LEDs of the Voicebox cable (marked ‘O’) into these matching holes of the K.I.T.T. Voice Box (4G) and Start-Up Panel Bracket (4H), as shown:

In the same way, insert the two LEDs of the Instrument Panel 2 cable (marked ‘L’) into these matching holes of the Right Instrument Housing (4E), as shown:

Step 8

Retrieve your Lower Right Instrument Housing assembly from Step 5. Reattach this Housing to the Dashboard with two (2) GP screws.

Note that these are new GP screws, not the BP screws we removed earlier:

Step 9

Insert the third LED of the Instrument Panel 1 cable (marked ‘J’) into this matching hole of the Left Instrument Housing (4F), as shown:

Step 10

Retrieve your Steering Wheel Keypad assembly from Stage 4. Temporarily uninstall the Steering Wheel Keypad Bracket from the rear of this assembly by removing the two (2) AP screws, as shown.

Take care not to dislodge or lose the two Left and Right Steering Wheel Keypads inside this assembly. Also, keep these AP screws nearby as we will reuse them during reassembly:

Step 11

Insert the two LED panels of the Steering Column cable (marked ‘I’) inside the Steering Wheel Keypad assembly, with the actual LEDs facing the Keypads as shown.

Note how the wiring for these LED panels are routed. This is to avoid the mounting posts and prevent any damage to the wiring:

Step 12

Fit the Steering Wheel Keypad Bracket back into this assembly, making sure no wires are pinched or in the way of any screw holes. Then,

  • Secure the middle two holes of this Keypad Bracket with two (2) GP screws (yellow circles)
  • Secure the outer two holes of this Keypad Bracket with the two (2) AP screws we removed in Step 10 (red circles)

Make sure the wiring of the Steering Column cable is coming out of the notch marked below with the white arrow, as shown:

Step 13

With the wires of the Steering Wheel Keypad assembly coming out the bottom, fit the assembly to this matching flange of the Dashboard Left Panel (4B) and align the screw holes, as shown:

Secure the assembly into place with two (2) GP screws:

Thoughts

With this stage complete, we have added the lighting to our Dashboard assembly and attached our steering column keypads. We will clean up this wiring as we work through the next stage.
